‘Scrubs’ helped her segue into songwriting
After getting a taste of the music industry, Kandi Burruss decided to pursue songwriting.
She began writing songs for TV shows, and one of her first songs was a hit single from the TLC show Scrubs.
The song, titled ‘Scrubs,’ became one of the network’s biggest hits, and she credits her show to helping her make the transition from singing to songwriting.
She took the idea to fellow Xscape member Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, and together they wrote the entire song. They recorded a demo and thought they’d keep it for a joint project, but other industry figures persuaded them to sell it to a larger group.
Burruss was immediately hooked and went on to record several songs.

‘Scrubs’ is a song by American R&B/Hip-Hop girl group TLC. Released on January 23, 1999, ‘Scrubs’ became the group’s third number one single, earning the group a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year.
It has since become the group’s trademark song, and is regarded as one of the group’s most memorable and successful singles.
The song has also been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and also earned TLC a Gold certification in the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
“Scrubs” became one of TLC’s biggest hits after the band’s creators, Tameka and Kandi, originally wrote the song as a jingle about worthless men.
However, the song’s message about women’s empowerment was so powerful and catchy that it became one of the group’s biggest hits.
However, it was not until later that ‘Scrubs’ became one of TLC’s biggest hits that the songwriters of the song took notice of its similarities and gave it due credit.
